National Louis University is committed to fostering an inclusive and respectful environment for all members of our community. As part of that commitment, we are pleased to share our new Preferred Name Policy, effective January 2026.
The Preferred Name Policy allows employees and students to designate a preferred first name that reflects how they wish to be known, while ensuring the University continues to meet legal, regulatory, and business requirements.
Key highlights of the policy include:
- Employees and students may select a preferred first name for use in most internal university systems, such as learning platforms, directories, class rosters, and identification cards.
- Legal names will continue to be used where required for official records, including payroll, tax documents, financial aid, and official transcripts.
- Preferred first names may be updated directly through the NLU Portal, and no documentation is required.
- The policy reinforces expectations around respect and non-discrimination, consistent with the Illinois Human Rights Act and the University’s EEO and Anti-Harassment Policy.
We encourage all employees to review the attached policy in full. If you have questions about how preferred names are displayed in specific systems or need assistance updating your information, please contact the Registrar's Office at registrar@nl.edu using your NLU student email account.
Thank you for helping us create a welcoming and inclusive community at NLU.
