New Changes Effective July 1, 2026
As many of you are aware, the federal One Big Beautiful Bill Act became effective on July 1, 2026, and includes significant changes to federal student loan borrowing limits for certain students.
To help our community better understand these changes, we have created a dedicated webpage that summarizes the new provisions, explains who is affected, and answers many of the questions students may have. We encourage you to review and share this resource with students as appropriate:

One of the most important provisions of the legislation is the grandfathering protection for currently enrolled students. Students who were enrolled at National Louis University as of June 30, 2026, received at least one federal Direct Loan disbursement for that specific program before July 1, 2026 AND who remain continuously enrolled, will generally continue to be subject to the previous federal loan borrowing limits and will not be impacted by the new restrictions established under the Act.
However, it is important for students to understand that this protection is contingent upon maintaining continuous enrollment (please note that the summer term is optional for most programs) and remaining in the same program of study. If a student withdraws, stops out, or otherwise breaks continuous enrollment and later returns to NLU, that student may no longer qualify for the grandfathering provisions and instead may become subject to the new federal loan borrowing limits established by the Act.
Because these changes could have a significant impact on students' ability to finance their education, we ask that faculty and staff who receive questions about the legislation direct students to the webpage above and encourage them to contact the Office of Financial Aid if they have questions about their individual circumstances.
